| World Cup fevers? |

With the World Cup underway, the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) is offering advice to its members on regulations for absences and other behaviour during sporting events. In addition, other model documents have been made free of charge to all REC members. Commenting on the new model, the REC’s Director of Professional Development, Fiona Coombe said, ‘Employers need to ensure that effective policies covering major sporting events, including the World Cup, are in place. In particular, they should make it clear that they are monitoring attendance more closely during the tournament. Should an employee’s sickness absence then be directly linked to football fixtures, an investigation may take place and they may be subject to disciplinary action.’ However, Coombe did also offer advice in the way of compromise. She suggested employees could take paid or unpaid annual leave on relevant match days, or alternatively they could work flexible hours.
